Lei Liang: Dui (“to face”) stages encounters betweennear and far, home and away, creating visionary moments that transgress space and time. The pipa virtuoso Wu Man and percussion master Steven Schick play upon the inherent tensions of their instruments, while Maya Beiser renders songs of the Mongolian steppe as both intimate
and vast with her cello singing. Cho-liang Lin and Zhe Lin weave together the sonic characteristics of violin and percussion, transforming uncommon ground into infinite possibilities. The innovative techniques of contrabassist Mark Dresser embody a rich spectrum of extreme opposites in a singular vibrating body, as the musical ensemble loadbang traverses through states of mind, disturbed by showers of phonetic particles from Chinese poetry.
